Yaal

My console on the bridge displays the star system containing the planet Yavion. Plotting our course to the planet should prove no challenge, but I carefully enter my computations regardless. We are due to rendezvous with other Alliance ships in the planet’s sector.

The journey will take several days at best, and with our ship fully repaired it should be a relatively uneventful, possibly boring trip for my crew. I initiate a full ship communication, marked by an undulating chime that is intended to get everyone’s attention from bow to stern.

“Attention all crewmates. This is Commander Yaal. We will begin our travels to the planet Yavion for a rendezvous. In the interim, I invite you to explore your favorite recreational activities. Please utilize this rare down time to its fullest extent. Thank you.”

Of course, stress isn’t an issue for me, but my crew can still fall prey to its mental predations. By allowing the crew to engage in recreation, I can help them reduce their stress levels and increase their overall productivity.

Pleased with myself, I set in the course for Yavion. Once our path has been plotted out and input, the ship is on its way and I have little to do as well.

My recent fisticuffs with the Odex intruder illustrated to me that my fitness regime could use some shoring up. While I was able to achieve victory, I calculate that my fast twitch muscle responses are down by one point five percent. This number may seem negligible, but every advantage—and disadvantage—counts double in space travel.

The margin for error is virtually nonexistent. One wrong decision, one time when I’m not quite fast enough, or smart enough, and the ship and its entire crew are doomed.

I head to the lift and take it down to a lower deck where our ship’s gymnasium is located. I consider stopping by Layla’s quarters and speaking with her, but then I reject the idea. For whatever reason, I seem to have offended her, and I feel that pressuring her with my presence might be detrimental to the recovery of our relationship, such as it is.

Trying to banish her from my mind, I enter the gym and find it deserted. It seems that most of my crew prefers other activities to physical fitness to fill their down time. I consider some ways to encourage a better attitude toward staying in fighting shape, short of actually penalizing the crew. To turn a human phrase, I intend to use a root vegetable rather than a cudgel to encourage them. Perhaps extra rations could be distributed? Or extra down time?

I engage in a precise stretching routine designed specifically for my cloned anatomy. Much like a racing steed, I must exercise regularly to maintain muscular health and density. The gravity in this part of the ship is a bit heavier than normal, making it the perfect place to lift weights with greater efficiency.

Once I’m suitably limber, it’s time to strength train. I know that the typical Odex weighs in at nearly five hundred pounds.
